Thatch is the accumulation of dead leaves and stems, clippings, roots and other organic matter that have not yet decomposed. Thatch impedes adequate water infiltration and promotes the presence and spread of parasitic fungi and other diseases as well as harmful insects. It can also render fertilizer applications ineffective.
The best way to remove thatch is by calling on our aeration service. Aeration is normally recommended once in spring or fall.
Aeration also has important benefits for decompacting the soil. Soil compaction results from a significant amount of walking or stamping on soil that is more clay-like (heavy) than sandy (light). The aerator we use extracts “plugs” of earth, which loosens the soil and thus allows for a better flow of oxygen, water and nutrients to the roots of the grass.
Be sure to repeat this highly beneficial activity every year.
