Fertilization – feeding your turf

Fertilizer

The amount of fertilizer needed depends on soil quality. A 1,000-foot area requires approximately:

Application schedule: Water lightly after each application of fertilizer to prevent burning the grass (if there is no rain) and to help root absorption. To avoid damage, never apply fertilizer during a heatwave. The four treatments are available in-store.

Lime and soil pH

A soil analysis is recommended every two to three years in the fall. This will detect any soil deficiencies and gauge the acidity level—two important factors for healthy turf. This test may be performed by Gazon Bastien or a specialized centre.

A pH less than 6 indicates the soil is acidic and should be treated with dolomitic lime. Apply the lime using a fertilizer spreader, preferably in fall or spring. Never apply lime on freshly seeded turf. It is preferable to apply lime before soil preparation. If a high dosage of lime is needed, apply it in two batches over two months.
