Prevention—a recipe for success

There are some useful tips available to help you prevent disease and maintain a quality lawn. You should begin by using a sufficient quantity of fertilizer to ensure your turf grows vigorously—though not excessively. Fertilize with organic products in summer to increase microbial activity in the soil and prevent disease.

Second, you should keep your mower blades well-sharpened. Dull blades will tear the grass, thus increasing susceptibility to disease. Grass should be kept around 7 cm high.

Third, it is important to manage thatch. This can be done by removing grass clippings every other mowing; clippings help increase thatch thickness. You can have our aeration service extract “plugs” of soil once a year. The best times to aerate are—in order of preference—fall and spring

Lastly, do not over-water. Once inch of water—including rainfall—per week is enough. It is also best to begin watering after 9:00 p.m. The longer turf stays wet, the more is susceptible to disease it will be.
