In order to improve the soil’s composition and improve its ability to retain moisture, make sure your soil is more clay-like than sandy—i.e., comprised of soil that is more “dense” than “light.”
Depending on the site, it is recommended that the ground be excavated while maintaining a slight slope away from the centre to ensure proper drainage. Clear any debris from the surface to ensure it is really uniform.
Then, call us at 450-477-0061 to place your order. We can also help you determine how much topsoil you will need to obtain a minimum thickness of four to six inches. This is also a good time to order rooting fertilizer. We suggest a thickness of six inches if your site is very sandy. After you receive the topsoil, spread it evenly throughout the site. It is important to compact the surface using a water-filled roller to ensure the surface is smooth (no footprints should be left behind when it is walked on). Do not compact topsoil with a road roller as this will prevent roots from penetrating.
We strongly recommend finishing with an application of rooting fertilizer at a rate of 5lbs per 1,000 square feet to help establish roots. Lastly, cover the fertilizer pellets with a thin layer of topsoil using a leaf rake. Your site is now ready for turf installation.
Once your site has been properly prepared, you are ready to begin installation. Be sure to call us at 450-477-0061 to place your order at least 48 hours before your planned installation. We strongly suggest that you make sure your site has been prepared before the turf is delivered, as it must be installed within 24 hours to maintain freshness. We suggest leaving the turf in a shady area until it is installed. The turf should not be watered while it is on the pallet—moisture will cause it to compost instead of keeping it fresh.
It is important to start at the end of the plot and work towards the exit in order to avoid damaging the newly-installed turf. Place the rolls by overlapping them like the bricks of a house. When you need to cut a roll to size, use a sharp knife or hatchet so that the edges match evenly. Avoid cutting small pieces as they will dry off quickly and eventually die.
Do not overlap rolls on top of each other. Instead, ensure that they line up together. Alternatively, avoid leaving spaces between the edges as weeds could grow in the gaps.
Turf installed on a steep slope will have a tendency to shift. This will cause it to dry out. We therefore recommend using biodegradable turf anchors, such as wooden stakes or a net placed over the ground to keep the turf in place. Once it has been unrolled and installed, level the turf by running a water-filled roller over it. This step ensures that the turf is in close contact with the soil underneath and encourages rooting. Lastly, make sure you remove any leftover turf cuttings as they will make the grass underneath turn yellow and thus reduce the site’s visual appeal.
Avoid over-watering. Too much water may prevent deep root growth, cause the turf and/or roots to rot, and increase vulnerability to disease.
If you install turf over a large area, we recommend watering as the installation progresses in order to maintain freshness. Take care to avoid watering the unturfed area as it will quickly become waterlogged.
Adjust watering to keep the soil moderately moist. In summertime, turf requires close to one inch of water a week (including rainfall). A regular watering should be done once or twice a week depending on the weather and wind.
Water early in the morning or in the evening when the evaporation rate is lower: this will allow water to soak into the ground more thoroughly.
