When to use grass seed:

Repairing winter damage
Patches of dead grass from dog urine
Old grass with lawn fungus that needs new genes
Grass more suited to its environment
Sunny areas, shaded spots, sports fields (high traffic)
Weed problem, mainly with foxtail or crabgrass that die at the end of August. The best time to sow in this case is when the weeds are no longer growing, as of mid-August (when annuals naturally die off) or early spring, by the end of May.
